Space weathering of iron sulfides in the lunar surface environment

چکیده

Alteration of iron sulfides on the lunar surface by space weathering is poorly understood. We examined features in mature soil grains using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission (TEM). SEM observations reveal that have vesicular textures whiskers their surfaces. Iron observed TEM are troilite NC-pyrrhotite. The space-weathered rim characterized crystallographic misorientations disappearance superstructure reflections diffraction patterns. These modifications probably produced solar wind irradiation. contains opened vesicles aligned along c-plane sulfides, as well numerous tiny vesicles. Fe/S ratio at higher than non-altered regions, indicating selective sulfur loss from surface. protrude weathered consist polycrystalline metallic iron. sulfide rims both coated with vapor-deposited materials rich O Si. combined processes driven irradiation, heating during impact events, UV radiation, thermal cycling may cause textures, escape formation whiskers. support notion enrichment heavy isotopes soils caused sulfides. similar to those regolith samples asteroid Itokawa. Therefore, alterations might be common among airless bodies system.

Mercury’s Weather-Beaten Surface: Understanding Mercury in the Context of Lunar and Asteroidal Space Weathering Studies

Mercury’s regolith, derived from the crustal bedrock, has been altered by a set of space weathering processes. Before we can interpret crustal composition, it is necessary to understand the nature of these surface alterations. The processes that space weather the surface are the same as those that form Mercury’s exosphere (micrometeoroid flux and solar D.L. Domingue (B) · W.C. Feldman · F. Vila...

Latitudinal variation in spectral properties of the lunar maria and implications for space weathering

Space weathering alters the optical properties of exposed surfaces over time, complicating the interpretation of spectroscopic observations of airless bodies like asteroids, Mercury, and the Moon. Solar wind and micrometeoroids are likely the dominant agents of space weathering, but their relative contributions are not yet well understood. Based primarily on Clementine mosaics, we report a prev...
